If your spouse has a snoring problem you do have a problem too. While your spouse is sleeping and snoring, you will not get definitely enough restful sleep especially if you are a light sleeper. Snoring is caused when the air ways are blocked, partial blockage of the sinus passages, poor muscle of the throat and tongue, and obesity which is the most common.
Many solutions and treatments have been tried to resolve snoring. Some of these anti snoring devices are found effective but not true to all people who are snoring. So before trying any of the methods and devices to stop snoring, you should first bring your spouse to the doctor to know the specific cause of snoring.
Improve lifestyles and behavioral changes are said to be effective for stopping snoring. Obesity is one of the major causes of snoring, and losing weight is the answer. Weight loss does not only stop snoring but it is also good for your health. Alcohol and smoking can also be the causes of snoring and avoiding these vices can help resolve the problem.
If the cause of snoring does belong to the aforementioned behavioral changes, then maybe it could be the partial blockage or narrowing of the airways which can be caused by the tongue or palate falling back during sleep. There is snoring device fitted for this problem called the Dental devices. These dental devices are similar to a mouthpiece and may reduce snoring up to 70-90%. However, there are some feedbacks about the device. This must be worn every night and it will keep the mouth open which can give an uncomfortable feeling for the person using the device.
For those people with narrow nasal passages, nasal devices or medication can lessen snoring. If the only area of narrowing is the front part of the nose, Breath-rite strips may help but may not be frequently effective. If the nasal mucosa is swelling due to allergy or irritation, a decongestant nasal spray is good. This kind of causative agent that causes the snoring is temporary and easy to treat.
Another device is the Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP). This is usually recommended to people who are diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea. The person will wear a mask with the tube connected to a pump and keep the pressure of inspired air at a higher level than normal. The pressure will prevent the airway from narrowing during the inhaling and exhaling. The pressure is adjustable by the person using the device. The problem with the CPAP is noisy, bulky, and uncomfortable for the person to wear it every night.
There are other anti snoring devices available OTC (over-the-counter) and some are not scientifically studied and approved and therefore not recommended to solve the snoring problem.
