The Importance of Sleep Apnea Tests

Sleep apnea is a condition that should not be taken lightly.  Although it may be considered as just bit worse than the problem of snoring, it is actually an ailment that can be fatal.  Sleep apnea does not just create those annoying sounds which can be identified as snoring.  This is not just a problem of the person sleeping beside someone with sleep apnea.  The more serious side of it is that it prevents someone from breathing normally while asleep.  Therefore, it is actually the problem of the sleeper itself, one that can deprive him of air and, ultimately life.

This is the reason why people who feel they have this condition must immediately take a sleep apnea test. It is through this test that doctors or sleep experts will be able to find out if the person is really suffering with such condition.  Once the sleep apnea test shows positive results, then the physician will have to prescribe oral medications. However, other methods may also be applied to fight sleep apnea.  A physician may also recommend the use of certain devices such as the CPAP in order to encourage normal breathing while asleep.  Aside from CPAP there are many other contraptions that can be worn or inserted into the mouth to normalize breathing.

One common sleep apnea test is the nocturnal polysomnography. In this kind of evaluation, certain types of equipment are hooked to the patient as he sleeps.  This equipment allows doctors to monitor the functions of the lungs and the heart.  The breathing pattern is also observed as well as the movements of the legs and arms.  The more advanced of such equipment even allows the doctors to monitor the mental activity while asleep at night.  A sleep apnea test that can be done at home by the patient himself is through the use of portable monitoring devices.  With these devices, the patient can also check his own heart rate, breathing pattern, and blood oxygen level.  However, such devices may not be able to accurately pinpoint sleep apnea always.  Because of this, it may still be necessary to pay the doctor a visit and undergo nocturnal polysomnography.
