Failure to get a good night’s rest can affect people in many different ways. Lack of sleep can cause crankiness and irritability. It can also cause people to lose concentration and be tired during the daytime. This can cause people to fall asleep during critical activities, such as driving, attending class or performing work with heavy machinery. Here are a few tips to help ensure a good night’s rest.

Caffeine
Limit caffeine consumption. Many people have difficulty falling asleep during the night when they have had too much caffeine during the day. Stopping caffeine consumption after certain hours, such as noon, may help. Limiting the number of caffeine drinks may also reduce the effects. Caffeine is present in items such as cola, coffee, tea and chocolate.

Light
Avoid attempting to sleep in a lit room. Light can be distracting and prevent restful slumber. For those that cannot avoid lighting issues, sleeping masks are available to completely black out the brightness.

Sleep Apnea
For those suffering from the medical condition known as sleep apnea, the body stops breathing during the night up to 100 times. The individual is often unaware of it until someone points it out or they attend a sleep clinic to find out why they suffer from a restless feeling in the morning, regardless of the time they go to bed. Set Hours
One way to improve sleeping habits is to go to bed at the same time every night. Set a schedule for going to sleep and waking up. For those who work during the day, sleeping at night is natural for the body’s clock. Those working night shift sometimes experience difficulty adjusting to an unusual sleeping schedule. This makes it difficult to rest during the day, when the body is used to being active, and equally hard to stay up at night.

Comfort
Anyone having difficulty sleeping should consider whether their sleeping environment is comfortable. A smooth mattress, clean bedding and suitable pajamas or nightclothes are keys to falling asleep faster and achieving rapid eye movement sleep (REM). Select a pillow that does not strain the neck and supports the head. Choose materials that do not spur allergic reactions for anyone sleeping in the bed. Consider room temperature and have a fresh blanket suitable to the climate.
